Mario Sánchez Nevado is a talented independent art director and illustrator with more than a decade of experience. His artwork delves into surrealism and fantasy, sometimes conveying political messages and other, dark atmospheres.
A master of photo manipulation and digital painting, Mario’s work will be on display in February 2025 in Delhi at The Instituto Cervantes as part of our project on male mental health project Fragile Strength.
For over 15 years, Mario Sánchez Nevado has been captivating audiences with his surreal, emotionally charged visual art. As an artist, illustrator, and art director, his creations delve into the depths of human vulnerability, internal struggles, and the quest for identity. From New York to Berlin and now to India, Mario’s works have traversed the globe, telling universal stories through his unique artistic lens.
As part of Artlune’s Fragile Strength exhibition, Mario brings his evocative artistry to India. His journey as an artist began with traditional techniques but gradually evolved into the digital realm, where photo editing, matte painting, and 3D modelling became his primary tools. For Mario, art is not merely a medium of expression but a bridge between his inner emotions and the shared human experience. His works reflect themes of pain and transformation, framed within vibrant colours and dynamic compositions.
Mario’s art often critiques societal constructs, particularly the pressures imposed on men by gender roles. “Men are conditioned to repress emotions and project strength at all costs,” he explains. This disconnection, he believes, isolates and dehumanizes individuals. Through his work, Mario explores what he calls invincible fragility—the power that emerges from embracing vulnerability.
In pieces like Evaporate, Charade, and Anxiety, Mario unpacks this narrative. Evaporate captures the erosion of identity, while Charade reveals the masks we wear to meet societal expectations. In Anxiety, he critiques capitalism’s vision of the “successful man,” highlighting how it prioritizes productivity over emotional well-being, leading to constant inner turmoil. These works are deeply reflective and critical, challenging today’s gender constructions and inviting viewers to ponder the complexities of masculinity.
Mario describes his creative process as an emotional journey, beginning with a feeling or question and evolving through methods akin to automatic writing. His art builds worlds, blending photography, digital painting, and 3D modelling to create immersive, thought-provoking pieces. For instance, in Drifting on a Sad Song, he balances the weightlessness of balloons against the gravity of a character, symbolising the tension between outward appearances and internal truths. His art invites viewers not to find answers but to ask their own questions.
Looking ahead, Mario is immersed in several exciting projects. He’s illustrating a cover for The Red March, an unofficial Dungeons & Dragons campaign featuring a tragic knight of roses grappling with honour in a hostile world—a blend of epic and vulnerable themes central to his work. He’s also working on covers for the Twin Blade Saga fantasy book series and various musical projects, which remain a deep passion. In Spain, he’s preparing a multimedia exhibition with DJ Sertek in January and continues developing his latest series, Psycho Climatic Conditions, which explores the connection between weather phenomena and emotional states.
Through Artlune, Mario is thrilled to bring his art to audiences in India and the UK. His contribution to the Fragile Strength exhibition embodies his belief in invincible fragility, a concept he hopes will resonate deeply with viewers, sparking emotions and thought-provoking questions.
Mario Sánchez Nevado's work is on display from 10 to 24 January 2025 at the Alliance Française de Delhi and from 15 to 28 February 2025 at The Instituto Cervantes New Delhi.
